Sweaty Notes: Mermaids & Unicorns [Interview & Giveaway]

Mermaids or Unicorns? Which one would you like to be? Well a local South African brand is making waves with their range of unique leggings.

I fell in love with this local brands’ prints. It spoke to the mermaid in me, my inner child and the alternative soul all at once. When I ordered my first pair of tights, it was love and first fit. The material is soft and comfortable, sweat absorbent and perfect for any workout you may wish to do. Or if you’re like me, you’ll wear them any wear to show off your fantastic fashion sense. What makes me an even bigger supporter of this brand, is the fact that this is a local business, using local labour and their products exceed quality expectations every single time.

I was fortunate enough to have Chuzzy (founder of M&U) answer a few questions for my blog:

What was your inspiration behind starting M&U?
We believe strongly in our spirit animals and past lives and so the inspiration of the brand began….. creating something our spirit animals would have to wear.

Give us a brief history of how the business started, struggles and wins included?
The idea started on the whim of a very inspirational trend forecasting trip in London, it took 2 years for us to develop the brand labelling, artworks, prints and first legging patterns.

What started off as a fun idea to create items that we would personally love to wear, not the same old commercial crap that has been around for ages. We were not to bothered whether or not others would like our designs, as long as we knew we would just die to wear them, and to our amazement, there were many crazy mermaid & unicorn loving people out there too.

Do you have any side gigs to M&U?
Both of use work full time on “proper” jobs, but the dream is to make this a full time fun way of living and earning.

Where do you find inspiration for your unique and quirky designs?
Absolutely everywhere. From fairy tales, to Christmas carols, any thing mythical and just our good old imaginations

Do you have any plans to expand internationally or introduce physical stores locally?
We currently ship to the UK but are definitely looking into spreading our wings to Australia and New Zealand. No physical stores are on the cards as we believe online is the future.

Do you have any environmental and sustainable causes your are passionate about?
To Free the world of non-recyclable plastics. It pollutes our oceans, kills our animals, and destroys the world we live in.

What’s your elevator pitch for your brand to a consumer?
We like to stay true to our quirky selves and our design aesthetic reflects this. We have chosen to indulge in the fantasy, rather than be driven by commerce or fleeting fashion trends.

What’s your business production setup like, small homey or big-ish factory?
We are a teeny tiny home based factory, using all local.

What do you believe should be the focus of the fashion industry in our modern era?
Simplicity is key. High quality textiles. Painstakingly tried and tested fits.

Lastly, what is your favourite, Mermaids or Unicorns?
If we had to tell you, we would have to kill you.
