Food Notes: Snack Bars 2.0

A few months ago I did a post on Snack Bars and it was definitely time to do a second version seeing that there are so many new ones that entered the market in the last few months. If you’re anything like me, I’m always on the hunt for the latest and greatest healthy snacks.

VANILLA CHOC CHIP PROTEIN BOOSTER BAR

by Pulsin (UK)

This bar had a smooth, buttery nougat texture with chocolate chips. Usually these bars are pretty high in sugar which means a major crash an hour afterward but I definitely noticed that this kept me full for a while. This bar containsΒ 13gΒ of PLANT BASED ProteinΒ so definitely a good snack option for our vegan friends too. At an average of R30 a bar, this is more of a payday treat.

CHERRY ORGANIC FRUIT & NUT BAR

by Beond (UK)

This was a traditional date bar with a sour twist due to the cherry flavour. There’s something about that sweet and sour taste that I absolutely love. Reminds me of sherbet. The sugar content was pretty high considering that one small bar has 14.5g. Still healthier than Cadbury’s right?! The price is easier on the pocket at an average of R20 per bar.

CACAO MINT PROTEIN BOMB ENERGY BALL

by Bounce (AUS)

My favourite flavour is definitely anything choc-mint and this ball came with the added bonus that it was high in protein too! Whey protein has been used, so not suitable for vegans but for the rest of us, a must have high protein chocolate. Taste is on the same level as a Lindt Mint Dark Chocolate, with added crunch. The price is about average R25 per bar. The sugar is pretty high, but the protein too so that’s a good compromise in my eyes!

Fun fact: “Bounce balls were launched in Australia in 2004 where they were the first ball shaped protein energy snack” – Forbes

PICK ME UP SUPER BERRY NUT CRUNCH NAKED PROTEIN BALL

by Luv Sum (AUS)

This was the first protein ball that I noticed on the shelves in the South Africa supermarket space. The ball contains only natural sugars (9.9g per ball) and satisfied my sweet tooth thoroughly. This also had a cookie dough/nougat texture with crunch. It’s decently priced at R20 per bar.

THE PEANUT

By Rude Health

This little bar packed a whole lot of punch that could potentially be a lightened version of Black Cat Bar but with no chocolate. It contains a whole lot of good-for-you seeds that adds a good amount crunch. It’s priced a bit high for a date bar at R25.
